Kaligandaki valley lies in the Annapurna conservation Area, the largest protected area ( 7629km2 ) in Nepal and was decleared in 1992. It is the Nepal’s only protected area that has all of country‘s six Himalayan Pheasant species – Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Koklas Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Cheer Pheasant and Kalij Pheasant are found in the Ghasa area of the valley.
Ghasa area lies in the Mustang district of Kaligandaki valley. It is one of the cultural boundary between Lamaistic north and Hinduistic south. Also lies in the narrowest section of the Kaligandaki George enclosed by sheer rock cliffs. This valley is a bio – geological divider and Kaligandaki river runs from north to south demarcating the eastern and western distribution of many species of flora and fauna in the Himalayan Mountain chain. The best season for pheasant is December to May.
